Udit Narayan, born on 1st December 1955, is a prominent playback singer who has created a mark in Bollywood. He was born in Baisi village in Bihar. He is known for his musical career spanning across decades and multi-lingual songs including Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, Odia, Nepali, Malayalam, and Assamese among others. His singing trajectory took an upward turn with popular songs like Papa Kehte Hain from the Amir Khan starrer Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. One of the top choices of acclaimed music directors like A.R. Rahman, Nadeem Shravan, Rajesh Roshan, Shankar Mahadevan, etc, he’s also produced acclaimed hits for major directors like Yash Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Karan Johar. Some of his superhit movies include Darr, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Mohabbatein, Swades, Veer Zaara, Aashiqui, Lagaan, Taal, Beta, Swades, Rangeela, etc.

1Lifestyle

Udit Narayan was born to Harekrishna Jha, a farmer and Bhuvneshwari Kumari, his mother who was a folk singer. It was his mother who encouraged him to embark on the journey of music. His son, Aditya Narayan has also, over the years, created a mark for himself in the Indian music industry. He is approximately 5'6'' and weighs around 70 kg. He has married twice. His first wife was Ranjana Narayan Jha. The turning point in his career came post singing all songs in the film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak.

2Career

Udit Narayan was born in Bihar and did his schooling and graduation from both Bihar and Nepal. He completed his early education at Shree Public Bindeshwari Secondary School, Rajbiraj, Nepal and his Senior Secondary from Jageshwar High School, Kunauli, Bihar. He further obtained his intermediary degree from Ratna Rajya Lakshmi Campus, Kathmandu, Nepal. After receiving a scholarship from Nepal Government, he moved to Mumbai and studied classical music at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan under the mentorship of Pandit Dinkar Kaikini. He is a prominent playback singer and on-screen voice for many bollywood stars. Starting from Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna and Dev Anand, to Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan, he has sung for all of them in very popular movies. He was known for his extraordinary duets, especially with singer Alka Yagnik. His career kicked off as a Maithili Folk singer for Radio Nepal. He used to sing in Nepali and Maithili mostly. After being noticed by music director, Rajesh Roshan, he got his first Hindi singing debut in the early 80s film Unees Bees. He was sung with the likes of Mohammed Rafi Sir. His list of songs is never ending. His first duet was for the film Sannata. His work includes 1983's Bade Dil Wala. He started singing with famous singers like Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Bappi Lahiri. The biggest turn in his career came when he got to sing all the songs in the film - Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. The film went on to become a blockbuster earning him a Filmfare Award for his playback singing in the movie. The song which gave him stardom was - Pehla Nasha. Even in the 2000s, he sang songs for movies like Lagaan and Veer Zara. A household name, his voice and melody gave life and music to the characters in the movie. Not only has he been loved by his audience but also received outstanding praise by his friends. He also tried his hands at acting in Nepali films. In 1985, Kusume Rumal was released which is a classic in the Nepali film industry. The movie was a box office hit and went to become one of the highest-grossing Nepali movies. Away from his film career, he judged at Indian Idol Season 3 in 2007 alongside Anu Malik and Alisha Chinai. He was also one of the judges on Sony TV's Warr Parivaar. The show brought together a family of singers. Owing to his immense contribution to the music fraternity, he has been a guest on numerous shows like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs and Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar. He sang the song - Dulhe Raja for an independent English movie - When Harry Tries to Marry. He and his wife have also sung together in a pop album - Dil Deewana.

3Best Works

Over the years, Udit Narayan has sung many songs. But his most memorable work remains Papa Kehte Hain and Pehla Nasha from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. The entire album was a game changer for him, Pehla Nasha catapulting him to super superstardom. Songs in movies like Lagaan, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Swades took him to the epitome of popularity.

When it comes to awards, Udit Narayan has won accolades of all types - Filmare, National and IIFA Awards. Not only was he one of the most popular singers of his time but also acclaimed by awards, winning hearts of the jury members as well.
