Know more about Ruskin Bond

The famous Ruskin Bond has written many books over the last so many years. Whenever you read any of the books written by Ruskin Bon, you come to the realization that the appeal of any of his famous stories was in the simplicity of his writing style. While writing simply, the depth of the subject matter was still profound. Most of Ruskin Bond's famous books are influenced by his life spent in the hill stations of India, especially his experiences while living in Dehradun. Ruskin Bond is perhaps one of the most famous contemporary Indian writers in the world, and Ruskin Bond books are much sought after by people of all ages. Born to British parents, over the years, Ruskin Bond has authored many inspiring children's books and won many prestigious awards all over the world. In fact, it won't be wrong to say that children's literature in India is synonymous with the name of Ruskin Bond, at least in the English language. From his first book, The Room on the Roof, which was published in 1956, Bond has created a special name for himself when it comes to children's ficssstion.

1Lifestyle

If you find yourself asking who is Ruskin Bond?, well, the answer to this profound question can be found in Bond's lifestyle that was shaped by the tragic events of his childhood and, thereafter, the time he spent growing up in Dehradun. Despite having a difficult childhood, Bond went on to develop a warm and affectionate personality, along with a deep love for nature. Perhaps most noteworthy is that Bond decided to become a writer as it was his father's earnest desire to see his son become a world-famous writer one day. It would not be incorrect to say that the first 20 years of his life groomed him to become a writer with a certain clarity about the realities of life. The beautiful manner in which Bond portrays these realities of life, even to make a small child understand them, is what sets his books apart today. 2Biography

Born on May 19, 1934, in the lush green hill town of Kasauli, India, Ruskin Bond was the son of Aubrey Bond and Edith Clarke. Bond's father served in the Royal Air Force, due to which the family frequently moved from one place to the next. Because of this, Bond was lucky to see many places within India, a fact that is deeply reflected later in his writings. At the age of eight, his parents separated, and his mother married another man. Throughout the years, Bond continued to have a complex relationship with his mother, who was distant and lacked affection toward her son. However, it was the undivided attention and love showered by his father that helped Bond thrive. The tragic and sudden death of his father left Bond feeling alone and broken. Following the demise of his father, Bond moved to the beautiful city of Dehradun to live with his grandmother, who ultimately raised him. From a young age itself, Bond found a sense of peace in reading books, a habit inculcated by his father again. Some of his favorite authors were Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, Charlotte Bronte, and Rudyard Kipling. Ruskin Bond did his early studies at Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, and it was during these school years itself that he started writing and even won numerous writing competitions, including the much-acclaimed Hailey Literature Prize and the Irwin Divinity Prize. After graduating in 1952, Bond moved away to England, where he stayed for the next four years.

3Career

It was in London, at the age of 17, that Bond wrote his first novel - The Room on the Roof. This novel follows the life of an Anglo-Indian teenager who is an orphan. The story charts the orphan's life as he runs away to live with his friends in an attempt to escape the tyranny of his guardian. Many experts have identified a strong autobiographical element in this book as the time Bond spent living in Dehradun. However, this novel remained unpublished until he was 21. For his first novel itself, Bond was awarded the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize, and this success motivated him to continue writing. He eventually wrote a sequel to this novel - Vagrants in the Valley. Following the success of his first book, Bond returned to India and began to work as a journalist in Delhi and Dehradun. He soon relocated to Mussoorie, a quaint little town sitting in the Himalayan foothills, and started a career as a freelance writer from 1963 onwards.

4Best Works

Once he began writing full-time, many of his essays and articles began appearing in numerous magazines and newspapers. To date, Bond has written over 300 short stories and essays and over 30 children's books. He has also written two autobiographies - Scenes from a Writer's Life and The Lamp is Lit: Leaves from a Journal. Some of the most famous works of Ruskin Bond include: ● The Room on the Roof ● The Blue Umbrella ● A Flight of Pigeons ● Funny Side Up ● The Night Train at Deoli and Other Stories ● Rusty, the Boy from the Hills ● Time Stops at Shamli and Other Stories ● Delhi is not Far

5Awards and Nominations

Ruskin Bond is a distinguished writer and perhaps one of the best children's writers India has produced. He was awarded the Sahitya Academy Award in 1992 for his book Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra. He received the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2014. His first novel also won him the prestigious John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in 1957. Ruskin Bond's books are famous world over today, and he has forever etched his name in English literature. His books have helped give flight to the imagination of many children, and his contribution to English literature, especially in the genre of children's writing, will forever be recognized.
